Imperial Oil, as a large power user in Ontario, is exposed to high coincident demand charges, known in its jurisdiction as Global Adjustment. To improve its bottom line, the company sought to integrate an on-site battery storage system that could optimize its energy use, lower costs, while reducing reliance on natural gas generation.

Imperial Oil selected Calibrant Energy as on-site energy solution provider. “Energy storage has a very compelling value proposition,” said Greg Thomas, Site Business Analyst at Imperial. “It allows us to lower emissions by charging batteries at night when the grid is primarily powered by renewables and then discharging them during the day to offset our Sarnia operations’ reliance on natural gas generation.”
